John Carty graduated from UC Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco and passed the California Bar Examination, on his first attempt, in 1980. He has been a practicing California attorney since being sworn in on December 16, 1980. He has practiced law in Calaveras, Stanislaus, Sacramento, and San Joaquin Counties for his entire career.

Born and raised in California to first-generation immigrants, I've known the value of hard work all my life. My father did manual labor for over five decades, and now I work to protect the rights of people just like him. I've worked continuously since the 5th grade as a shoe shiner, newspaper boy, dishwasher, janitor, landscaper, pizza deliverer, cook at McDonald's and Burger King, construction worker, and carpenter. While I was not born in California, I have spent the majority of my life here in the Central Valley. Both my father and mother and their respective families are from Tulare County, and I was raised in Woodlake. After graduating from Woodlake High School, I went to College of Sequoias where I played football and was on the track team. Thereafter, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After being Honorably Discharged, I returned to College of Sequoias before transferring to Fresno State University where I studied physiology and anatomy.
